Fat Vampire
A Never-Coming-of-Age Story
by Adam Rex
Doug Lee has become a vampire at fifteen and is appalled to discover that immortality preserves the body he hoped to outgrow. Drinking cow blood is a disappointing substitute for the glamorous life he imagined. An exchange student catches his attention, while a cable television vampire hunter sees him as a way to improve the ratings.

What makes it funny?
At a party, Doug tries announcing that he is a vampire as a way to interest a girl. He ends up explaining his failed all-blood diet and getting thrown out. His friend thinks the exit could have used a demonstration of supernatural power.
The comedy at work
Rex keeps testing vampire glamour against Doug's limitations. Even turning into a bat can go wrong halfway through. The author describes deliberately avoiding wealthy, beautiful immortals and making the search for blood involve such prospects as a panda and the Red Cross.
Try this if…
Fans of adolescent embarrassment and vampire parody have plenty to work with here. Doug's supernatural abilities give him new ways to make bad decisions, and the horror remains part of the story.
Good to know
There are body-image jokes, sexual humor and profanity. Kirkus praises the comedy but objects to jokes involving race, disability and gay stereotypes. Rex has also discussed deliberately portraying Doug's casual homophobia.
