What makes it funny?
The opening chapter follows an airship landing with a glimpse of the cult its marks in a wheat field will eventually inspire. The pilot has no idea. McCloud lets the narrator wander far beyond the travelers’ immediate concerns, while the Avenue of Ovens becomes the Ovenue and even the street paving invites a bread joke.
The comedy at work
Food puns accompany a less innocent joke about power: Vallora wants a culinary vacation, but the party keeps encountering the consequences of her empire. The narrator interrupts the adventure to explain things the characters don’t know, giving their cheerful plans an absurd or uncomfortable second meaning.
Try this if…
A short culinary fantasy for readers who enjoy talkative narrators, bad puns and a queer traveling party. The political satire gives the food tour a sharper edge than a simple celebration of bakeries and taverns.
Good to know
The series borrows its adventuring-party flavor from Dungeons & Dragons and Japanese role-playing games. Despite the playful setup, the first chapter discusses a massacre, wartime injury and a former soldier’s nightmares.
