Signs of Cupidity

by Raven Kennedy

Heart Hassle · Book 1 · 2018

Emelle arranges romance for everyone except herself. As an invisible cupid, she can stir up attraction but can’t enjoy a body, a drink or a relationship. Bad matchmaking gets her sent away from the human world. When she fires Love Arrows at a fae prince, his retaliation gives her a physical body and a chance to seek love of her own.

From the publisher’s blurb

“This time, she's going to find love for herself.”

What makes it funny?

The opening gives Emelle a phantom itch she has been unable to scratch for decades. She watches terrible pickup lines succeed, complains about the cupid job’s lack of retirement and discovers that the cheerful recruitment material left out some lethal fine print.

The comedy at work

A hopeless romantic has taken a job that keeps her permanently outside everyone else’s love life. Kennedy makes Emelle a resentful employee as well as a lonely supernatural being, with blunt sexual commentary and petty interventions in other people’s matches.

Try this if…

Emelle’s running commentary is a large part of the appeal. Readers who enjoy a talkative, sexually frank heroine and fantasy romance that takes its time have room to settle into her new life. Nem’s review found her inner dialogue funny before wanting more romance and less commentary later on.

Good to know

Expect frequent profanity and sexual jokes. This begins a romance involving multiple men, often called reverse harem or why choose romance. Nem’s review emphasizes the slow romantic progress in this volume, so the explicit talk doesn’t mean the relationships move quickly.

A few distinguishing details

  • A cupid who can’t experience the love she arranges
  • Afterlife employment with dangerous fine print
