Zombie Fallout

by Mark Tufo

Zombie Fallout · Book 1

Michael Talbot has spent years preparing for disasters he didn't really expect to happen. In this zombie outbreak, a rushed flu vaccine leaves people dead and then hungry for human flesh. Mike must protect his family and help his neighbors turn their gated community, Little Turtle, into somewhere they might survive.

From the author’s blurb

“our lead character at his self-deprecating, sarcastic best.”

What makes it funny?

Mike's emergency supplies don't include a more dignified personality. The Bay State Reader's Advisory review points to his New England sarcasm, Massachusetts sports references and fart jokes, delivered amid the mess of decomposing bodies. An apocalypse gives him plenty to complain about without making his comments any more tactful.

The comedy at work

His dry resignation suggests that this particular disaster was always going to happen to him. Publishers Weekly identifies that attitude as part of the prose's humor. Self-deprecation and familiar irritations keep his account personal while the community faces increasingly gruesome danger.

Try this if…

Zombie-survival readers who like a protective family man with an insensitive mouth are the likely audience. Crude bodily humor is part of Mike's company, along with the preparations and the fighting.

Good to know

The gore includes pus, bodily excretions and dismemberment. The Bay State reviewer enjoyed the humor and suspense but criticized Tufo's word usage; Mike's insensitive remarks may also affect whether you want to stay with his voice.
