What makes it funny?

Lizzy opens by boasting that she graduated in the top ninety-three percent of her culinary-school class. Then she admits she failed gravy. The joke gives her a voice that can make even an explanation of her qualifications sound like a confession.

The comedy at work

Glo wants her childhood forehead scar to count as evidence of magical destiny; Clara remembers that she got it by crashing into a coffee table. When Glo looks for a flying spell, Clara would prefer help with the cookies. Magical possibilities keep running into bakery work and a colleague who refuses to be impressed.

Try this if…

Readers in book groups recommend Wicked Appetite and the Lizzy and Diesel books for funny paranormal reading. Kirkus describes a supernatural farce: approach it for improbable adventures and flirtation as well as the search for the stones.

Good to know

The opening includes sexual jokes, a drunken mishap and a threatening encounter that leaves Lizzy burned. Diesel crosses over from the Stephanie Plum books, but readers in book groups say you can start here without reading them. Wicked Business and Wicked Charms follow.
