What makes it funny?
Vera texts her son at 4:31 a.m. to tell him he is sleeping too late. Her warning that late dinners killed Uncle Lin earns an inconvenient reply: he died because a bus hit him.
The comedy at work
Vera’s confidence survives facts that ought to trouble it. Her son and the third-person narrator supply corrections, while she continues to treat her own opinions as useful instructions for everyone else.
Try this if…
The friendships matter as much as the suspects’ secrets. Readers drawn to gentle character humor, elaborate meals and a lonely person finding company have much to enjoy here.
Good to know
The third-person narration moves among the central characters, giving the suspects lives beyond Vera’s view of them.
