The Adventures of Tom Stranger, Interdimensional Insurance Agent

by Larry Correia

Tom Stranger’s insurance business covers disasters across alternate Earths. Tentacle monsters and an enemy call center demand his attention, while Jimmy, the intern he was never supposed to receive, makes excellent customer service harder to deliver.

From the author’s blurb

“It’s time to kick ass and adjust claims.”

What makes it funny?

Adam Baldwin narrates an adventure in which another Adam Baldwin is president. A joke about Firefly imagines a dimension where the show lasted only one season. Correia fills the surrounding chaos with familiar figures in unlikely combinations.

The comedy at work

Tom treats spectacular threats as insurance business. The language of claims and customer satisfaction persists through the monster fighting, while pop-culture references interrupt any attempt to take the adventure solemnly.

Try this if…

Fast, unruly science fiction for readers who enjoy knowing references to genre television and abrasive political jokes. The pace and the deliberate excess matter more here than a carefully bounded speculative world.

Good to know

Written as an audio-original novella for Baldwin to perform. Expect hyperviolent action and crude sexual jokes, including a threat involving genital harvesting. Jimmy’s Gender Studies major is a repeated target of ridicule; the GeekDad review warns that the political derision may put some readers off.
