What makes it funny?
The opening chapter gives Roth’s old nickname, the Slayer, an awkward retirement. He hugs Wilson and apologizes; Wilson remembers getting his nose broken for failing to use that very nickname. Readers in LitRPG groups single out the same change in his gaming habits: Roth will progress without fighting and cannot stand to see even game rats hurt.
The comedy at work
Other players expect the familiar aggressive gamer and struggle to make sense of his new behavior. Early reviewers particularly enjoy watching Roth pursue unusual interactions with the game’s characters while his fellow players think he has lost his mind.
Try this if…
The appeal is finding another route through a game built around conflict. Readers describe a funny, relaxed series with a protagonist whose principles matter, and have found it a satisfying follow-up to the Ripple System. Noncombat progression and concern for small creatures are the specific attractions they name.
Good to know
Podium describes the book as containing no sexual content, profanity, gore or harem; readers also appreciate the lack of constant cussing. The setup still involves imprisonment, past violence and revenge. Some early readers found the real-world storyline hard to believe or disliked shifts into the antagonists’ viewpoints.
