What makes it funny?

Jane's voice does much of the work. In the opening, she explains that her library boss has disliked her ever since Jane mocked a Mother Goose hat. Then comes the detail that Jane was four. Her sharp commentary makes even the humiliating business of getting fired a source of jokes.

The comedy at work

Vampire life brings its own versions of familiar social obligations: a welcome basket, awkward questions from a mother and trouble with a new man. Publishers Weekly praises the steady quips and the humanity behind Jane's sarcasm. The supernatural complications give her plenty to complain about.

Try this if…

For readers who enjoy paranormal romance, a talkative first-person narrator and a murder subplot. Readers in book groups also recommend Harper's humor, especially in audio; that enthusiasm concerns her books generally rather than this title alone.

Good to know

The setup includes heavy drinking, an accidental shooting, blood and murder. This is the first Jane Jameson novel; the publisher also lists it as the opening book in its Half-Moon Hollow sequence.
