Monster
Judy's supermarket night shift takes a turn when a yeti starts eating ice cream from the freezer aisle. Monster is the pest controller called to handle creatures ordinary Animal Control can't manage. They don't much like each other, but the trouble ahead reaches well beyond the store.

What makes it funny?
Monster has to discover his own skin color and magical ability afresh each morning. His assistant, Chester, is a being from another dimension who appears as folded paper. Judy's new problems require a stranger sort of help than a call to the night manager.
The comedy at work
Martinez gives supernatural emergencies the frustrations of service work. The creatures are extraordinary; the people handling them are overworked and argumentative. Judy and Monster's bickering stays free of the usual suggestion that they ought to fall in love.
Try this if…
For readers who like modern fantasy about people doing difficult jobs, peculiar creatures and reluctant partners who keep arguing.
Good to know
The partnership isn't a romance. Kirkus enjoyed the book's lighter pleasures while finding its plot predictable.
More funny urban fantasy
