What makes it funny?
Damien knows how to play the sinister child: he deliberately makes himself unsettling to his mother. His calculated performance shares space with Hal’s dad jokes and poorly timed sports comparisons, turning familiar family irritations into uncomfortable comedy.
The comedy at work
The haunted-house story has a second source of mischief inside the family. A child deliberately imitating a little monster makes the ordinary household tensions harder to separate from the supernatural ones.
Try this if…
Best suited to readers of unsettling horror who enjoy a sardonic family dynamic and bizarre turns. The humor accompanies the haunted-house story, and reactions to how funny it is vary.
