What makes it funny?
The narrator can't settle on whether Dirk was popular: the attention he attracts is closer to the spectacle of a motorway accident. Even his hat receives a lengthy assessment that concludes it would look better on a bedside lamp.
The comedy at work
Adams keeps correcting and qualifying his descriptions until an apparently straightforward introduction has turned into a joke at Dirk's expense. The detective parody gives those digressions a larger setting in which improbable people and impossible connections belong to the same investigation.
Try this if…
An appetite for tangled mysteries and ridiculous personalities will serve you well here. Readers seeking carefully grounded scientific explanations may find its approach to paradox less satisfying than readers who enjoy a detective story taken far beyond ordinary police work.
