What makes it funny?
Chip cannot even deliver a convincing disclaimer. While denying that a secret government group has bought his silence, he gets distracted by how good he looks in the jacket they supposedly never gave him. His urge to tell the story keeps sabotaging his efforts to deny it.
The comedy at work
Dab of Darkness describes a double act between a narrator who panics and a friend who can get him out of trouble. The misunderstandings extend to Bobo, an alien who picks up an obscene hand gesture as a friendly greeting.
Try this if…
Readers in book groups have suggested it alongside Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. If you enjoy a chatty narrator facing impossible science-fiction predicaments, Chip’s evasions give you a useful taste of his voice.
Good to know
The story unfolds through emails and entries from Tesla’s notebook. Expect cursing and obscene gestures; the Dab of Darkness reviewer also wished the cast had more female characters.
