Thomas Prescott · Book 1

Retired homicide detective Thomas Prescott wants no part of the bestselling account of his old serial-killer case. He knows something its readers don't: Tristen Grayer survived. When women close to Prescott start dying on the anniversary of the earlier murders, he turns to his former flame, medical examiner Caitlin Dodds, for help.

From the author’s blurb

What makes it funny?

Pirog's favorite example has Prescott leap from a cliff into the water, then tell an FBI rival who wants to follow that he'll have to wait: it's adult swim. Prescott treats a dangerous escape as a chance to annoy someone.

The comedy at work

Prescott's smart-aleck responses accompany the pursuit of a serial killer. His flippancy is frequent enough that critic Lars Walker thought the jokes sometimes crowded out an appropriate response to other people's suffering.

Try this if…

A taste for sarcastic investigators helps here. The murder plot supplies danger, while Prescott keeps making cracks; readers who prefer their detectives solemn may find his manner wearing.

Good to know

The story involves gruesome serial murders. Walker also cautions about language and adult situations, and finds Prescott's joking callous at times.
