The Questing Stones give Evelia Greene a disappointingly ordinary purpose in life: buy bread from a neighboring village. Then she checks the difficulty. A Legendary task has landed on a brand-new messenger, and the trip soon attracts far more trouble than a shopping errand should.

What makes it funny?

The opening’s grand ceremony includes a mother whose lifelong ambition is to knit the most comfortable sweater. Eve has objections even before she tackles the bread: the system calls her a Messenger Girl, and she would much prefer a title that sounds less belittling.

The comedy at work

Valentine gives errands and trades the ranks and solemnity of heroic destinies. The supposedly simple objective remains in sight while bakery disasters, monsters and distracting assignments turn its completion into an increasingly unreasonable prospect.

Try this if…

Readers amused by game rules being followed to ridiculous conclusions have a clear point of entry. Classes and status screens matter, but Eve begins with an ordinary delivery role; the adventure depends on how much trouble can gather around a small task.

Good to know

This novel also appears as This Quest Is Bullshit! The series title is another joke: This Trilogy Is Broken has four main volumes. Expect profanity and fantasy violence. Andrew Tell narrates the unabridged audiobook.

A few distinguishing details

  • A Legendary task to buy bread
  • A game system that assigns lifelong ambitions
