What makes it funny?
The author’s introduction gives William the sort of impossible biography a tavern storyteller might swear is true. The storyteller then suggests buying him a drink to improve the chances of a miraculous rescue. A final note reveals that this authority on heroes has left without paying his tab.
The comedy at work
Tall tales introduce the chapters, inflating William’s adventures into folklore. The joke depends on the distance between a person trying to survive and the superhuman figure strangers confidently describe.
Try this if…
Readers who enjoy tower-climbing fantasy with an exaggerated folk hero at its center have a clear reason to look here. The running tall tales suit a taste for adventure that regularly invites you to question the storyteller.
Good to know
The author flags graphic violence and profanity. Soundbooth Theater’s audio edition uses Ryan H. Reid as its lead narrator alongside a featured cast.
