Buying a sledgehammer, Thea tells the hardware-store clerk she plans to demolish “patriarchal power structures.” Then she clarifies: a wall. He meets her declaration with a practical warning to check whether it holds the house up.
The comedy at work
The men take romance novels seriously enough to use them as marriage advice. Their conversations about feelings and relationships still leave room for crude jokes and teasing.
