What makes it funny?
Dan’s idea of a birthday request is a jar of pesto. The couple’s more ambitious efforts fare worse, including an ugly sweater and a breakfast its recipient doesn’t want.
The comedy at work
The pair can predict each other’s restaurant orders, then struggle to choose something unexpected that the other person will enjoy. Sylvie’s private vocabulary for her husband’s moods adds another set of comic judgments.
Try this if…
An established marriage supplies the awkwardness here. The appeal extends to readers who want family relationships and emotional trouble alongside the misfired gifts.
Good to know
Grief over Sylvie’s father and fears of infidelity become important to the story.
