What makes it funny?
Before the accident, Lexi has a boyfriend who wants everyone to call him Butch and friends whose karaoke makes a taxi driver refuse them a ride. Her running commentary punctures their ambitions while admitting her own insecurities.
The comedy at work
The memory gap makes Lexi a stranger inside her own apparent success story. Her bewilderment gives the glamorous marriage and executive lifestyle an awkwardness that the old, self-doubting Lexi recognizes more easily.
Try this if…
Romantic intrigue and office politics told by a narrator who can turn an embarrassing evening into a detailed account of everyone's bad decisions.
Good to know
The opening includes swearing, sexual conversation and grief over a parent's death. The central setup involves an accident and memory loss. Publishers Weekly found the outcome familiar and some of the supporting cast exaggerated.
