What makes it funny?
Stranded in a ditch after dodging a raccoon, Alexis finds room to complain about her shapewear. Her friend Bri answers with an exaggerated joke about the underwear: an emergency quickly acquires the familiar indignities of a conversation between friends.
The comedy at work
In the opening chapter, Alexis keeps bringing an alarming situation back to physical discomfort, and Bri responds by making it sound even more ridiculous. That exchange gives their friendship a teasing rhythm.
Try this if…
Readers in romance book groups single out the banter between the big-city doctor and the small-town carpenter and mayor. The relationship may suit readers who like an age and class divide, with family conflict carrying emotional weight alongside the jokes.
Good to know
The story includes an emotionally abusive former partner and pressure from Alexis’s parents. Those conflicts matter to the romance.
