Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind
by Ann B. Ross
Miss Julia · Book 1
Widow Julia Springer has inherited far more money than she knew her husband possessed. Then Hazel Marie Puckett arrives with a nine-year-old boy and announces that he is the late Mr. Springer’s son. Julia must make room for the child while her neighbors, and especially her church, take a close interest in her fortune.

What makes it funny?
Julia says she does not believe in speaking ill of the dead, even while recalling that her husband refused air-conditioning at home but kept his bank office chilly. Her narration keeps giving away the irritation beneath her proper manners.
The comedy at work
Respectable appearances matter intensely to Julia, which makes her candid asides especially revealing. Ross also gives the people around her self-serving reasons to sound virtuous: the pastor’s interest in her husband’s supposed wishes has a great deal to do with the money left behind.
Try this if…
Small-town Southern fiction with a talkative, opinionated older heroine is the draw here. Readers interested in widowhood and a woman learning to make her own decisions will find those concerns alongside the neighborhood scheming.
Good to know
Adultery and bereavement shape the setup, and the plot includes kidnapping and challenges to Julia’s competence. The novel also examines racial and religious attitudes in its Southern community.
