What makes it funny?
The demon wants Jim alive so it can kill him later. That selfish reason for protecting him makes their forced partnership an arrangement neither would choose.
The comedy at work
A beginner zone should offer a newcomer somewhere to learn. Centuries of neglect have made this one unsuitable for beginners, leaving Jim to discover how little reassurance a familiar game label provides.

Game rules and leveling shape Jim's attempts to survive the abandoned region. The uneasy companionship gives those survival problems a second source of friction.
