What makes it funny?

The opening gives Fortune’s lethal footwear a second casualty: the CIA assistant who loved those expensive Prada shoes. Later, a colleague fears what Fortune might do with knitting needles. She objects to his account of an earlier pencil incident because he has the brand wrong.

The comedy at work

Fortune treats killing as familiar work and a beauty makeover as an ordeal. DeLeon keeps returning her combat instincts to everyday objects and social expectations, while her colleagues answer her complaints with insults of their own.

Try this if…

For readers who enjoy an abrasive, capable heroine whose biggest adjustment is ordinary social life, with a murder case and dangerous undercover work behind the jokes.

Good to know

The opening refers to child trafficking and killing, and Fortune faces a bounty on her life. The sarcastic exchanges accompany genuine danger.
