What makes it funny?
Cannie knows her friend Samantha's call signals disaster because Samantha, a busy lawyer, actually agrees to hold. The magazine that causes the trouble sells confident advice about sex and better buttocks, then gives Cannie's ex space to congratulate himself for dating her.
The comedy at work
Cannie notices the little performances people put on, from her friend's telephone rules to a magazine's promises of self-improvement. Her sarcasm gives her something to say while she is still reeling from what other people have said about her.
Try this if…
Body image and the mess of a breakup matter here alongside friendship and work. Readers who enjoy a sharp-speaking heroine dealing with hurt may appreciate the mixture of wit and emotional recovery.
Good to know
Weight stigma, public discussion of a sexual relationship, emotional abuse and parental abandonment are substantial subjects. Certain Girls returns to Cannie's story after this novel.
