What makes it funny?
An HMO executive earns his promotion by working out that wrongful-death lawsuits cost less than organ transplants. The board keeps selling coverage and stops paying the claims. That calculation gives a fair idea of how Dorsey treats Florida’s business class.
The comedy at work
Dorsey uses a laconic voice for crimes that grow increasingly elaborate. In the insurance-company scenes, executives discuss cruelty with the satisfaction of people who have solved a routine management problem.
Try this if…
For readers who like grotesque crime capers, elaborate murder methods and satire aimed at the people handling the money.
Good to know
Expect graphic violence, sexual situations and drug use. Kirkus admired the comic set pieces but found the plot slow and dependent on unlikely coincidences.
