Brad the Impaler · Book 1 · 2024
Audiobook available · 18 hr 48 min
A medieval chest deposits Brad Wright and his Chihuahua, Slash, in Darkworld. Brad knows strategy games, but this one pits shelter-building and crafting against monsters, a hostile AI and people who have paid to hunt other players. Losing means being erased from reality. Slash has also acquired the ability to talk.

What makes it funny?
Slash uses his new voice freely. A reader testimonial on Sating’s site describes the dog trying to help Brad meet women, then wrecking those efforts with his dirty language. The small companion who wants to improve Brad’s prospects keeps getting in his way.
The comedy at work
The advertising gives its survival hero a loincloth and a seven-pound dog with an oversized mouth. Slash’s commentary and a wisecracking AI keep puncturing the heroic presentation, even while the game threatens its players with permanent consequences.
Try this if…
For readers drawn to crafting, survival games and a talkative animal companion, there’s a clear combination here. Swearing and naughty jokes are a large part of the advertised appeal.
Good to know
Expect lethal violence and profanity. The publisher specifies no harem, and Sating identifies the series as complete.
