# Vainqueur the Dragon

Vainqueur Knightsbane sleeps on a pile of treasure and regards adventurers as a nuisance. Then a thief forced into his service explains classes, levels and quests. The dragon sees a business opportunity: he could collect rewards for hunting monsters and make his hoard grow faster.

## What makes it funny?

The usual reward for a fantasy adventurer is surviving a dragon. Here the dragon wants an adventurer’s paycheck. His interest in changing careers begins with the same greed that made him a menace in the first place.

### The comedy at work

Vainqueur’s enormous confidence gives his human minion Victor an awkward job: trying to turn a dragon’s appetites into workable plans. Their unequal partnership supplies a second source of jokes alongside the reversed roles of monster and questing hero.

### Try this if…

An option for readers who want broad fantasy parody and a dragon at the center of the action. The game rules matter: earning levels and collecting rewards help drive the adventure, with treasure providing a simple motive.

### Good to know

This begins a completed four-book series. Its dragon enjoys kidnapping princesses and making adventurers miserable; the appeal depends on finding that greedy, self-satisfied outlook funny.
