# Throne in the Dark

By A. K. Caggiano · Villains & Virtues, book 1

Damien, a demon's son with plans for world domination, becomes magically bound to Amma, a cheerful thief. She complicates his quest and starts awakening feelings that have little place in his chosen villainous future.

## What makes it funny?

Damien announces the completion of his life's work, and the narration promptly reminds us that he is twenty-seven. His ambitions receive far more reverence from him than from the account of his adventures.

### The comedy at work

Grandiose villain speech keeps running into casual dialogue and petty frustrations. Affection is another indignity for a would-be destroyer: Amma's influence threatens the ruthless identity Damien has worked so hard to present.

### Try this if…

Patient romantic development and jokes about familiar fantasy roles are central. Readers who enjoy watching enemies become attached while their preferred versions of themselves fall apart may find the extended journey appealing.

### Good to know

Abduction, blood magic and casual murder accompany the jokes. The romance develops slowly, and some reviewers found the journey meandering before the main trilogy continues.
