Aubrey Jackson hopes a retreat with celebrated novelist Willow Fox will help her finish her first book. Willow’s murder gives her a much more immediate puzzle. When the police suspect one of her friends, Aubrey and her writing companions start investigating.

## What makes it funny?

Asked whether she noticed anyone suspicious, Aubrey reports a squirrel. Detective Tate checks whether that is somebody’s nickname; she explains that she means the animal. Meanwhile, she attributes her racing heart to stress while studying his physique.

### The comedy at work

Aubrey can invent a murder, but finding a real corpse leaves her sobbing through a police interview. Her literal answers frustrate Tate, while her attraction to him keeps interrupting her thoughts about the case.

### Try this if…

Writers may recognize the blank-page panic and jokes about plotting. Friendship and romantic uncertainty give readers other things to follow between clues.

### Good to know

Passages from Aubrey’s own mystery appear inside the book. That fictional story also has an associated novella, Murder for Shore.
