Mika Moon has learned to keep her witchcraft and her distance from other people. An invitation to teach three young witches at Nowhere House asks her to break those habits. The household's protective librarian, Jamie, isn't ready to trust her.

## What makes it funny?

The witches conduct a solemn meeting on an exposed Hebridean pier in October. Mika has given their unnamed group silly alternative names, mostly to annoy the woman who has appointed herself its leader.

### The comedy at work

Mika notices the inconvenience and social awkwardness behind magical rules. Her private jokes and teasing take the grandeur out of witch society, giving its insistence on secrecy a familiar human pettiness.

### Try this if…

Warmth, a complicated household and a wary romance carry the story alongside gentle wit. This may suit readers interested in people gradually learning to rely on each other.

### Good to know

Mika grew up without lasting caregivers, and the children she teaches are orphans. Those experiences shape the story's interest in belonging.
