Becoming a vampire hasn’t made Fred any bolder. The timid accountant still prefers a quiet life, but a trip to his high school reunion draws him into a supernatural society with dangers he has little appetite for.

## What makes it funny?

Packing for the reunion, Fred worries that a bag of blood will look garish in his luggage. He settles on a faux-silver flask between his pressed shirts: even his feeding arrangements have to look respectable.

### The comedy at work

Fred tells his story with the caution of an accountant sorting out a practical problem. Blood requires a reliable supply, and the glamorous vampire life he learned about in movies keeps failing to materialize.

### Try this if…

An awkward narrator and friendships with monsters give readers a way into supernatural adventure through everyday concerns. Fred’s practical habits are part of the appeal for anyone who prefers a reluctant participant to a swaggering vampire.

### Good to know

The book follows Fred through a succession of supernatural adventures.
