# The (Sort of) Dark Mage

By Nelson Chereta · Waldo Rabbit, book 1

Profile: https://hahafiction.com/books/the-sort-of-dark-mage-d8268aa1/

Waldo Corpselover has an evil council to impress. Sent out from the kingdom where he grew up, he must prove his worth on a dangerous magical journey. The habits he learned among monsters and the undead make poor preparation for the wider world.

## What makes it funny?

Waldo takes dark magic for granted; the people beyond his homeland do not. Drew Hayes’s review also singles out the characters’ individual voices and conversational habits as a source of humor.

### Try this if…

The companions and the route matter more here than keeping every destination a surprise. Hayes praises the comic characters and straightforward storytelling while finding the broad plot easy to anticipate.

### Good to know

This installment leaves its central conflict unresolved. Plan on continuing the series if you want the larger story to reach a conclusion.
