Precious Ramotswe opens a detective agency in Botswana with a small white van and a gift for understanding people. Clients bring suspicions about partners, missing relatives and doubtful claims. A missing boy presents a more troubling problem among her early cases.

## What makes it funny?

In the author's excerpt, Ramotswe borrows a nurse's uniform and delivers an alarming medical request with complete confidence. Her supposed errand of mercy is a test of someone else's honesty. Readers in book groups praise the intelligent, playful characters and find the interwoven stories funny.

### The comedy at work

Ramotswe gives people room to reveal themselves. McCall Smith's calm account of her practical maneuvers lets their vanity and self-interest supply the jokes; Publishers Weekly singles out her intuition, wisdom and humor.

### Try this if…

Leisurely, character-led detection is the attraction here. The cases form connected episodes, with time for tea and a sense of everyday Botswana life. Readers recommend the series as light and entertaining, and the critic's review suggests an audience beyond dedicated mystery readers.

### Good to know

The pace divided readers: one found this first book slow, while another enjoyed Ramotswe without being sure about continuing. The gentleness also has limits: a missing-child case raises fears of ritual killing. Starting here introduces the agency, though the publisher says the books can be enjoyed in any order.
