A burger ends Delphie's life at twenty-seven, and an administrative mistake interrupts her first promising encounter in the afterlife. Jonah is sent back to Earth; Delphie gets ten days to find him and secure a kiss that will let her stay alive. He doesn't remember her.

## What makes it funny?

The afterlife's waiting room resembles a laundromat because its therapist finds washing machines soothing. Merritt happily explains her decorating choices while Delphie struggles to understand whether she's dead. Even the news of her death has to compete with a discussion of paint.

### The comedy at work

Delphie's narration keeps returning to embarrassment: even while choking, she worries about being found in her terrible nightclothes. Her chance to escape death soon involves familiar romantic complications, including posing as her grouchy neighbor's girlfriend at a family dinner to get his help finding Jonah.

### Try this if…

Broad, sitcom-style comedy and large emotions suit a heroine whose quest forces her out of isolation. Readers drawn to romantic schemes and a lonely character gradually finding connections have more to follow than the question of whether she'll locate her supposed soulmate.

### Good to know

The opening describes Delphie's fatal choking in detail and includes strong language. Loneliness is a substantial part of her situation, even when the afterlife arrangements are played for laughs.
