Aria's werewolf bite gives her parents a new set of responsibilities. Her mother Vivian must find a place for the kindergartner in an elite magical school, learn its social rules and cope with a prophecy that sounds dangerously relevant to her child.

## What makes it funny?

The school supply list requires a whetstone for a kindergartner. Parents must also volunteer to provide class sacrifices, with a reassuring note that animal offerings aren't approved. Vivian still has to work out what she's expected to bring.

### The comedy at work

Magic exaggerates the expense and status anxiety of school life. A grimoire can be the wrong sort of school supply for the same reasons ordinary parents worry about clothes, while Vivian tries to avoid making her family conspicuous.

### Try this if…

Parenting comedy and school politics drive this sympathetic satire. Readers interested in the adults behind a child's magical education may recognize the pressure to keep up with families who already know all the rules.

### Good to know

Vivian is the central character. Aria's dangerous new needs and her parents' wish for her to belong give the comedy serious emotional stakes.
