Roth has spent four years in prison learning to control the temper that wrecked his life. He wants a peaceful fresh start. His former gaming companions have other plans: they trap him inside AstroTerra, a virtual world where he refuses to hurt anyone, including its monsters.

The opening chapter gives Roth’s old nickname, the Slayer, an awkward retirement. He hugs Wilson and apologizes; Wilson remembers getting his nose broken for failing to use that very nickname.
