Aunt Dahlia wants an antique cow creamer, and Bertie Wooster is the nephew available to help. Her instructions take him to Totleigh Towers, where the Bassett family and would-be dictator Roderick Spode give him much more to worry about than a piece of silver.

## What makes it funny?

Before the theft, Aunt Dahlia wants Bertie to visit an antique shop and speak disparagingly about the creamer. His grand anxieties get little encouragement from Jeeves. Even a question about whether trousers matter receives a calmly dismissive reply.

### The comedy at work

Bertie describes social trouble with the urgency of a catastrophe. Jeeves' composure makes his master's alarm funnier, while the carefully tangled plot keeps giving Bertie reasons to panic.

### Try this if…

Intricate social farce for readers who like an excitable narrator paired with someone who keeps a straight face.

### Good to know

The Wodehouse Society says these Jeeves novels can be read out of chronological order. Spode and his Black Shorts add a political caricature to the country-house trouble.
