Romance novelist Hazel Hart has missed too many deadlines after her marriage ends. Hoping to find a new story, she buys a house in Story Lake, Pennsylvania, without seeing it first. The repairs require contractor Cam Bishop; the writing apparently requires pretending to date him.

## What makes it funny?

Hazel considers a heroine waking from a coma as a romantic opening, then gets distracted by the problem of bad breath. Her own neglected hygiene soon intrudes on that assessment. Back home, her agent Zoey is unimpressed by Hazel’s insistence that she is busy working.

### The comedy at work

A professional romance writer keeps trying to turn her surroundings into usable tropes while her best friend supplies blunt reminders of how she is actually living. Story Lake adds its own distractions, including a teenage mayor and a bad-tempered bald eagle called Goose.

### Try this if…

For readers who enjoy fake dating, a grumpy romantic lead, and a small-town cast with plenty to do outside the central relationship.

### Good to know

This is a steamy romance about starting over after divorce, with writer’s block and a threatened publishing contract among Hazel’s worries.
