After a mimic eats Army veteran Logan Murray, he wakes in another world as a three-foot mushroom creature. Shadowcroft Academy expects him to learn dungeon building and defend the Tree of Souls against the people called heroes.

## What makes it funny?

Before the monster training, Logan’s complaints about a hungover employee give the opening chapter a dry, verbally playful voice. The academy adds its own academic indignities, putting dungeon design and the ethics of killing on the syllabus.

### The comedy at work

Deadly work comes with the familiar obligations of school. Course requirements make monstrous behavior sound routine, while Logan approaches his extraordinary circumstances with a practical veteran’s grumbling.

### Try this if…

Readers interested in learning to build and defend a dungeon may enjoy following an underpowered student through an academy. Logan’s everyday complaints provide a comic voice alongside the work of improving his abilities.

### Good to know

The opening includes coarse language and discussion of Logan’s combat injury and prosthetic leg. The setup involves monster violence and training to kill heroes.
