An old magazine gives Esther a theory: everyone dates the same seven types of person. She recognizes her exes in the list and begins to wonder whether she has already let the right partner go. With her friends encouraging the project, she starts contacting former boyfriends to find out.

## What makes it funny?

Esther gives a throwaway piece of dating advice the attention of a serious investigation. Following it means approaching seven people she once broke up with, turning a tidy magazine formula into a succession of awkward reunions.

### The comedy at work

The seven categories promise to explain Esther’s romantic history. Meeting the actual people again puts that certainty under pressure, especially when her memories of a relationship do not tell the whole story.

### Try this if…

The guessing game offers an entry for readers who like revisiting old relationships and reconsidering past choices. Female friendship also receives substantial attention, including the strain Esther’s search puts on the people supporting her.

### Good to know

The chapters revisit how relationships began and ended alongside the present-day reunions. Expect swearing and some poignant moments as well as the dating mishaps.
