Rosaline Palmer needs the prize money from Bake Expectations to give her daughter a more secure life. The baking competition also introduces two distracting contestants: Alain, who meets her parents' expectations, and Harry, an electrician she initially underestimates.

## What makes it funny?

The contestants have to manage their attraction to each other while keeping their baking intact. Kirkus singles out the kitchen mishaps and Rosaline's daughter Amelie among the pleasures of this televised contest.

### The comedy at work

A reality show keeps romantic prospects together while making them compete. Rosaline's judgments about class complicate her choice between the polished Alain and the gentler Harry.

### Try this if…

Baking-show fans get a romance in which the heroine has concerns beyond finding a partner. Rosaline's bisexuality, her daughter and her growing self-respect matter to the story.

### Good to know

The author flags biphobia, homophobia, gaslighting and threats of sexual assault, along with on-page sexual content and strong language. Those subjects sit alongside the gentler baking-show setup.
