Cleaner and student Abi stays in an absent client’s penthouse while her apartment is fumigated. Declan’s parents find her there and assume she is Abby, the girlfriend he invented. Declan offers to pay Abi to keep his imaginary relationship alive.

## What makes it funny?

Abi notices that she keeps thinking the word hence and interrupts herself to comment on the habit. Even her private frustration attracts her own editorial attention.

### The comedy at work

Declan’s invented girlfriend acquires a real identity because her name sounds like Abi’s. Preserving that useful mistake means arranging convincing affection, bringing the employee and her wealthy client closer than the original lie required.

### Try this if…

A fake-dating romance for readers interested in class differences and a practical heroine who answers back. The luxurious setting supplies wish fulfillment while Abi has immediate financial reasons to agree to the performance.

### Good to know

Abi works two jobs and attends college part-time. Pretending to be her client’s girlfriend is paid work, making money and their existing employment relationship part of the setup.
