Lula Dean wants to decide what Troy, Georgia, should read. She campaigns against books and sets up a lending library of titles she approves, but Lindsay Underwood secretly replaces them with forbidden reading for the neighbors.

## What makes it funny?

Lindsay keeps the respectable dust jackets and swaps the books inside. Lula unknowingly lends out the very reading she wants suppressed, with her own seal of approval still on the outside.

### The comedy at work

Miller directs the satire at Lula’s confidence that she knows what everyone else should read. Her attempt to control the town gives her neighbors access to ideas she fears.

### Try this if…

Readers who enjoy politically pointed small-town satire can follow a large cast drawn into a fight over censorship.

### Good to know

The novel takes an anti-censorship position. Nazi memorabilia, Confederate monuments and LGBTQ+ acceptance are among its subjects.
