# Lucky Jim

By Kingsley Amis

Jim Dixon teaches medieval history at a provincial English university, where keeping his post means getting along with people he can barely stand. His efforts to secure his job and improve his love life keep drawing him into the academic society he resents.

## What makes it funny?

A ruined guest bed and a disastrous public lecture give Dixon's bad decisions room to escalate. The prose makes even waking with a hangover into an ordeal of extravagant bodily misery: in the passage reproduced by Slightly Foxed, opening his eyes is almost more than Dixon can bear.

### The comedy at work

Dixon needs approval from the people he wants to ridicule. Amis keeps that dependence close to his resentment, then lets physical mishaps and exaggerated descriptions expose how poorly he is coping.

### Try this if…

Academic pomposity, social maneuvering and a resentful lecturer give this satire its targets. The limited book-group report includes recommendations alongside readers who did not enjoy it; its comic reputation doesn't mean everyone takes to Dixon.

### Good to know

Published in 1954, Lucky Jim directs its satire at postwar English manners and university life. Its contempt for academic pretension is central to the humor.
