Murphy is stuck in Geneva, Illinois, after failing accounting. Flirting with former classmate Ellie offers a welcome distraction until Murphy discovers that Ellie’s mother is the professor standing in the way of her plans. A fake relationship over a holiday weekend might help each woman get where she wants to go, provided they can keep the attraction out of it.

## What makes it funny?

Murphy finds a promising romantic prospect and then discovers a new route back to the class she is struggling to pass. Dating the professor’s daughter becomes a proposed solution to an academic problem, making every effort to impress one person relevant to the other.

### The comedy at work

One woman’s mother is the other woman’s academic gatekeeper. That overlap makes their private arrangement difficult to contain: performing a relationship for practical reasons means spending time together when their interest is already real.

### Try this if…

Readers drawn to sapphic fake dating can also find the uncertainty of early adulthood here. Murphy’s stalled education and changing childhood friendships give the holiday homecoming stakes beyond securing a date.

### Good to know

The holiday is Thanksgiving. Murphy is 21, and the story deals with being left behind as friends move into different lives.
