One wine-fueled evening with some hand-me-down equipment turns into a podcast called Heidi’s Discount Erotica. Shy former kindergarten teacher Heidi Larsen reads steamy fiction aloud and reveals her crush on her neighbor. What begins as a mortifying accident becomes a way to grow more comfortable in her own skin.

## What makes it funny?

Heidi can barely bring herself to read the romantic passages in Amish novels, yet she ends up presenting erotic fiction to strangers. The Smut Report’s reviewer singles out her habit of calling a penis a fern: even her vocabulary needs a workaround.

### The comedy at work

The podcast puts Heidi’s private embarrassment on public display. Trying to sound worldly while avoiding sexual language gives her an awkward problem every time she switches on the microphone.

### Try this if…

The romance has little relationship drama; Heidi’s growing confidence takes center stage. Readers who enjoy bashful heroines and affectionate exaggerations of Midwestern manners may find that appealing.

### Good to know

Sexual language and explicit, deliberately awkward sex are part of the comedy. Heidi also worries about disappointing her parents.
