Daphne's fiancé leaves her for Petra, whose abandoned partner, Miles, becomes Daphne's new roommate. A children's librarian in Waning Bay, Daphne now has to rebuild her life while sharing a home with someone nursing the same rejection. They decide to pretend they're dating and give their exes something to think about.

## What makes it funny?

Daphne remembers the trash-can collision that Peter left out of his charming account of how they met. Miles, meanwhile, keeps replaying a miserable scene from Bridget Jones's Diary.

### The comedy at work

Daphne's self-mocking narration supplies the unflattering details behind a polished romance. The fake relationship gives her and Miles another story to maintain, even as they start forming a real friendship. Sharp dialogue adds humor to their uneasy new arrangement.

### Try this if…

The appeal is in fake dating between roommates, a small-town social circle and people finding their footing after rejection. Readers who care about lively conversations as much as romantic complications have plenty to follow here.

### Good to know

The romance is steamy, with breakup pain and difficult family relationships alongside the jokes. Swearing and cannabis use appear.
