Alice joins the wedding party for Gin, her ex-girlfriend and friend, while privately struggling with grief. Helping the celebration succeed means working with Renee, a maid of honor who is openly hostile to her. The wedding gives them tasks to share and little room to avoid each other.

## What makes it funny?

At the engagement party, Alice gives Gin her pantsuit and takes the bride’s wine-stained dress. It does not fit. Alice’s dry assessment of how conspicuous she looks supplies the joke as she tries to do someone a favor under uncomfortable conditions.

### The comedy at work

Alice narrates the gap between expected wedding-party enthusiasm and what attending actually requires of her. Her restrained jokes let awkward obligations remain funny even when she has painful reasons for finding the celebration difficult.

### Try this if…

The romance offers enemies becoming lovers through the practical demands of a DIY wedding. Readers who want friendship repair and emotional complications alongside the banter will also find sobriety and bereavement central to Alice’s life.

### Good to know

Alice is sober and grieving her father’s alcohol-related death. The opening sample includes swearing and memories of blackout drinking.
