# Dumped, Actually

Ollie Sweet's public proposal ends with Samantha breaking up with him. He turns the humiliation into a column, asking his readers how to recover from a failed relationship and testing their suggestions on himself.

## What makes it funny?

The advice sends Ollie into fresh embarrassments, including a painful grooming session and an encounter with wildlife that involves accidental exposure. His attempts to recover his dignity become popular reading for his online audience.

### The comedy at work

Reader emails interrupt Ollie's story with advice and accounts of other breakups. Spalding uses that stream of suggestions to push a disappointed romantic into situations his idealized view of relationships hasn't prepared him for.

### Try this if…

Breakup comedy with a male narrator, embarrassing physical mishaps and time spent working through hurt feelings. Ollie's efforts to understand himself matter alongside the dating trouble.

### Good to know

The comedy includes nudity and intimate grooming. An early rooftop encounter involves a suicidal man, so the story's treatment of heartbreak includes more serious distress.
