# Dating & Dismemberment

By A. L. Brody · Mating and Monsters, book 1

Profile: https://hahafiction.com/books/dating-dismemberment-2efc21fb/

Darla has a reputation to uphold as a feared camp monster, but hunting has begun to wear on her. When attractive trespasser Jarko encroaches on her territory, she challenges him to a series of hunts to take it back. Their rivalry makes room for a romance between monsters.

## What makes it funny?

Darla’s opening attack gets interrupted by doubts about her vocation. The bodily harm continues to matter, but the narration describes it with the casual comparisons of someone doing familiar work. A monster can menace a victim while wondering whether she still likes the job.

### The comedy at work

Brody treats the slasher monster’s role as an occupation that can lose its appeal. That ordinary frustration sits beside gruesome violence, letting the reader follow the person wielding the threat and her complaints about having to keep doing it.

### Try this if…

Romance readers with a taste for horror and dark comedy can find a courtship that keeps the monsters dangerous. The casual treatment of violence is part of the joke, so enjoyment depends on an appetite for bloody material.

### Good to know

The publisher flags dismemberment, decapitation, bullying, family trauma and dangerous weapons.
